Spring Training Update

Posted on 28th February, by andybarkett in Staff. No Comments

Very cool day today in Jupiter.  Normally, in big league camp, I am a working bee.  My tools for the day are a fungo, glove to play catch before I throw batting practice, stopwatch and that is it.  When I got to the ballpark today, I was informed of my duties for the day.  Go and manage the “B” game on the back fields vs. the Cardinals.  Leave the fungo in your locker and grab a lineup card.  Both major league managers were in attendance, Marlins’ skipper Mike Redmond & Cardinals’ manager, Mike Matheny.  It was pretty cool running the game and coaching 3rd base with both major league staffs and front office in attendance.  It was a “B” game and the only big name that anyone would recognize was Rafael Furcal, who had a few at bats as the DH.  The Marlins were down 3-1 in the 9th and after scoring 5 runs in the top of the inning, we held on for the 6-3

victory.  After that game, I hustled in the clubhouse for a quick bite to eat, then on the main stadium to watch the “A” game.  The results weren’t as good as the back fields for the big club today, but the dugout was a highlight as we were visited by some former Marlins’ players and managers.   Hall of Famers Tony Perez & Andre Dawson hung out today and former Marlins Jake McKeon,  Jeff Conine & Mike Lowell were also in the dugout with the squad.  All of them are very solid guys and obviously have a wealth of baseball knowledge and experience.  I am very blessed as a “Baseball Guy” to be able to be around these gentlemen.  I try and soak up any piece of information I can from them to try to improve as an instructor and help develop players both with the Marlins and Baseball Pros Academy.  My time with the big league club is coming to an end, as the minor leaguers report next week.  Cuts will be made up top and the Jacksonville Suns will start working together as a group, preparing for the 2013 season.  So, most likely I will finish 2013 Spring Training with a 1-0 record as a Major League Manager.  I will take it.
